½ tsp salt

For the Gravy & Bake:

1 tbsp unsalted butter
-
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
-
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
-
2 cups beef broth
-
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
-
½ tsp dried thyme
-
½ tsp paprika
-
Salt and pepper to taste
-
¼ cup sour cream (optional, for extra richness)
Optional Garnish:
-
Chopped parsley
-
Fried onions
-
Mashed potatoes or egg noodles for serving
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Hamburger Steaks
-
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
-
Mix just until combined—avoid overmixing for tender patties.
-
Shape into 4–6 oval patties, about ½-inch thick.
Step 2: Sear the Patties
4. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
5. Add patties and sear for 2–3 minutes per side until browned (they don’t need to cook through).
6. Transfer patties to a plate and set aside.
Step 3: Make the Onion Gravy
7. In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions. Sauté until soft and golden, about 5 minutes.
8. Sprinkle in flour and stir to form a roux. Cook for 1 minute.
9. Gradually whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and paprika.
10. Bring to a simmer and cook until slightly thickened, 3–5 minutes.
11. Stir in sour cream if using for a creamy finish. Taste and adjust salt and pepper.
Step 4: Assemble the Bake
12. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
13. Pour a little gravy into the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
14. Place the browned patties in the dish and pour the rest of the gravy over the top, making sure they’re mostly covered.
Step 5: Bake to Perfection
15. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
16. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until bubbly and the patties are cooked through.
Step 6: Serve & Enjoy
17. Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving.
18. Garnish with chopped parsley or crispy fried onions for a little extra flavor and crunch.
19. Serve over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice to soak up that rich gravy.
Notes
Don’t Overmix – Keep the patties tender by mixing the beef just until combined.
Brown First – Searing adds flavor and helps the patties hold together.
Gravy Consistency – If it’s too thick, add a splash more broth. Too thin? Simmer a bit longer.
Add Veggies – You can add mushrooms, peas, or green beans to the gravy for more heartiness.
Make It Creamier – Stir in sour cream or a splash of heavy cream for extra richness.
