Instructions
Step 1: Bake the Cupcakes
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line muffin tins with cupcake liners.
In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
In a separate bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
Alternately add dry ingredients and milk until just combined.
Fill cupcake liners 2/3 full and bake for 18–20 minutes.
Cool completely on wire racks.
Step 2: Make the Frosting
In a large bowl, beat butter until smooth.
Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until light and fluffy.
Add vanilla, salt, and 2–3 tbsp milk to reach desired consistency.
Divide frosting into bowls and tint with food coloring as needed for each animal.
Step 3: Decorate the Cupcakes
Pig Cupcakes
-
Frost with pink buttercream using a smooth round tip.
-
Use pink candy or fondant circles for snouts and triangles for ears.
-
Add candy eyes and small dots of chocolate or icing for nostrils.
Cow Cupcakes
-
Frost with white frosting and add chocolate chips or mini Oreo halves as spots.
-
Use black licorice or fondant for ears and pink for a snout.
-
Candy eyes and a smiling mouth complete the look.
Chick Cupcakes
-
Frost with yellow buttercream using a star tip for texture.
-
Add orange candy or fondant triangles for the beak.
-
Use mini chocolate chips or black icing dots for eyes.
-
Optional: add tufts of shredded coconut on top for a fluffy look.
Sheep Cupcakes
-
Pipe white frosting in swirls or use mini marshmallows to create “wool.”
-
Use black fondant or candy for face and ears.
-
Candy eyes give the sheep personality.
Step 4: Assemble the Cupcake Cake
On a large cake board or serving tray, arrange the cupcakes in the shape of a barnyard scene or a single large animal face (like a pig or cow).
Fill gaps with extra frosting, coconut “grass,” or edible flowers to complete the scene.
Serve as a pull-apart cake—no cutting required!
Notes
Chill Slightly Before Decorating – A cool cupcake makes frosting easier.
Use Gel Food Coloring – For vibrant, rich colors that won’t water down the icing.
Mix and Match Animals – Add horses, ducks, or even a barn cupcake to tell the full farm story.
Get the Kids Involved – Let them decorate a few cupcakes for extra fun.
