Ingredients
For the French Toast:
-
4 slices white sandwich bread (thick-cut preferred)
-
2–3 tbsp peanut butter (or kaya, chocolate spread, etc.)
-
2 large eggs
-
2 tbsp whole milk
-
1 tsp sugar
-
1 tsp vanilla extract
-
Pinch of salt
-
Oil for frying (vegetable or neutral oil)
For Serving:
-
1 tbsp butter (for topping)
-
Maple syrup, golden syrup, or honey (to drizzle)
-
Powdered sugar (optional for dusting)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Bread
-
Spread peanut butter (or your chosen filling) evenly on two slices of bread.
-
Top with the other two slices to make sandwiches.
-
Gently press the edges together to seal slightly.
Step 2: Make the Egg Batter
-
In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.
-
Mix until smooth and well combined.
Step 3: Dip the Sandwiches
-
Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat (about ¼ inch deep).
-
While the oil heats, dip each sandwich into the egg batter, coating all sides thoroughly.
-
Let the excess batter drip off.
Step 4: Fry the Toast
-
Carefully place the dipped sandwiches into the hot oil.
-
Fry for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
-
Flip gently with tongs or a spatula to avoid splashing.
-
Remove and drain on paper towels.
Step 5: Garnish and Serve
-
Place the fried toast on a plate while still hot.
-
Top with a pat of butter, and drizzle with maple syrup, golden syrup, or honey.
-
Optional: Lightly dust with powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness.
-
Serve immediately for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
Use Thick Bread – White sandwich bread or milk bread works best to hold the filling and absorb the egg.
Seal the Edges – Pressing the bread helps keep the filling from leaking out when frying.
Don’t Overcrowd – Fry one sandwich at a time for even cooking and crispy texture.
Watch the Heat – Medium heat ensures the inside warms through without burning the crust.
Go Sweet or Savory – Try ham and cheese for a salty twist, then skip the syrup topping.
